Ohio Department of Insurance Agent / Agency Services

 Continuing Education

All licensed insurance agents in Ohio are required to complete 20 hours of approved continuing education every two years. Only courses approved by the Ohio Department of Insurance will apply toward this requirement.

The following classes of agents are exempt from continuing education requirements:

  • Persons holding a limited authority license
  • Non-resident agents in compliance with continuing education
    requirements of their home state
  • Persons granted inactive license status by the State Director of Insurance

Persons holding only a title license need only complete 10 hours of title specific credit hours. An agent holding a Title license in addition to a Resident Agent license must complete 20 credits from Ohio approved courses.

Surety Bail Bond agents are required to complete 14 credits of continuing education specifically related to the bail bond business. An agent holding a Bail Bond license authority in addition to a Property and Casualty or Life and Health authority must complete 14 of the required 20 credits from Bail Bond approved courses.

Interim transcripts indicating courses completed will be sent to each agent approximately 90 days prior to the end of the agent’s compliance period. A final transcript indicating compliance or noncompliance will be sent within 90 days after the end of the agent’s compliance period. All compliance periods end on December 31.

Extensions to complete the required hours of continuing education, due to disability or special circumstances, may be granted at the discretion of the State Director of Insurance. Request must be made in writing, prior to the conclusion of the compliance period.  Please send all requests for time extensions, any supporting documentation, and a $100 processing fee to:
